December 5, 2023: A new article on the myxobiota of Peru by Dr. Treviño-Zevallos and other members of the Myxotropic Project, forming part of a series of studies on Myxomycetes from the Peruvian Andes and the altiplano, has just been published in Phytotaxa.
In this study, the region between 3000 and 5000 m.a.s.l. has been explored, and more than 3300 collections, resulting from six field expeditions, moist chamber cultures, and the revision of HSP herbarium specimens, have been identified. The authors have recorded 178 different taxa, belonging to 31 genera, and ten rare species, which have been recorded for the first time in the Neotropics, and could be considered real treasures.
The results of this study are surprising due to the great diversity of Myxomycetes existing in this apparently inhospitable region of Peru, and demonstrate the role of the Andes Cordillera in the distribution of these protists.
